This winter I invested in a turbo trainer for rainy day fitness (this is the one I got, in case you’re interested what it is), it’s pretty effective, but it’s also super boring.
Another issue is that it’s extremely noisy, so watching TV while you cycle is hard work, and although listening to music on headphones works, you’re left staring at an uninspiring wall.
Now that all the WSL World Tour heats are available on YouTube I’ve come up with a way to catch up with the tour and workout at the same time. It goes like this:
- Put a heat on your TV/iPad/laptop (I watch it on YouTube but play it on the TV. I turn the sound off, because I can’t hear it properly over the noise of the turbo trainer, and listen to music instead).
- Get on your bike!
- Cycle at a pace you could sustain for half an hour (the whole heat basically).
- When a surfer is on a wave (like Carissa below) pedal as hard as you can until they fall off.
- Repeat until the end of the heat.
Not only do you get a great interval workout, if you’re anything like me, you’re likely to work harder because you’re watching some pretty inspiring surfing. You’re also guaranteed to get a different workout each time as no two heats are the same. If you want to make it more intense, you can add in some extra rules – try upping the intensity again for a replay.
