I bought this bikini in Costa Rica, I hadn’t actually planned to purchase, but it was my first experience of warm water surfing and it turns none of the bikinis I took with me were wipe-out or duck dive proof.

Fashion bikinis = not so hot in the water

After several days of exposing myself in most ways possible, I decided to hunt for a surf-specific bikini. Luckily Costa Rica has a good selection, so I was spoilt for choice. I tried on a lot in a boutique in Nosara (I think it was affiliated with Del Mar Surf Camp), but none felt like they were going to completely stick on in the water.

I had heard of Calavera before, so I was quite keen to find somewhere that stocked their range, and luckily there was a stockist in Santa Teresa, where we were headed next.

I tried on everything they had in my size, and ended up with the Siren top and Skimpy bottoms (in the colours above). If you can, I would recommend finding a stockist to try on the range, as the pieces I ended up with were not what I would have picked from the website.

Flattering, supportive and surf-proof

My main criteria were that I wanted something that looked nice, had a supportive top and didn’t come off in the water. Somewhat surprisingly, I found the skimpy bottoms had the most flattering fit (normally  I would have gone for more coverage) and the Siren top felt the most supportive (I had previously had my eye on the Glam top, which was still lovely, but the Siren just felt that little bit more secure). The fabrics are soft and high quality, and both pieces feel well made, which is good, as these bikinis aren’t at the cheap end of the market.

Verdict: They stayed on!

As the primary reason for purchasing was to keep covered in the water, I’m pleased to say that Calavera most definitely stayed put. I had my most spectacular wipeout with this on and upon emerging from the water nothing was out of place.

The drawstring inside the bikini bottoms makes a world of difference to keeping them up, and it was a relief not to have to do a bum exposure check after each duck dive attempt. The top was similarly impressive, no indecent exposure as yet!

If you’re looking for a high quality, pretty and flattering surf bikini that stays put, then check out Calavera.
