It’s baking outside and all I can think of is jumping in water. So here’s five of the coolest (literally, I hope) outdoor pools in the south west.

1. Treyarnon tidal pool

This is possibly my favourite as I swam in it so many times on summer holidays while I was a child. It’s not that big (probably more of a giant rock pool) but there’s definitely enough room for a cooling dip.

2. Jubilee Pool, Penzance

This art deco saltwater pool is newly re-opened and a lovely place to cool off.

3. Bude tidal pool

I love following this pool’s account on Instagram, it looks stunning at all times of year, but it’s especially inviting in the midst of a heat wave.

4. Bristol Lido

City dwellers can head to Bristol’s Lido for a refreshing swim. Nearby there’s also Clevedon Marine Lake and Greenbank Swimming Pool in Street.

5. Perranporth tidal pool

I love that this pool (pictured on a more cloudy day at the top) is smack bang in the middle of the beach (at low tide) yet unless you investigated you might never know it was there.

Other pools

I’m keeping this list brief as it’s making me want to dive head first into a refreshing body of water, but there’s loads of other amazing pools around the south west if you seek them out – from The Scarlet’s luxury “wild” swimming pool to tidal sea pools at Mousehole, Ilfracombe, Westwood Ho! and many more.
